Genealogy

geni.comJust a quick plug for a new genaeology site. Very cool. Would be nice if it could import/export different formats. I use Gramps right now (Smith-Murphy Family).

So what happened to The Purple Monkey? You decided you liked Ideola better?

    Hey Stephen,

In a word…laziness. tpm is setup with Dreamhost, and I used there WordPress install. It was just too slow and when I upgraded it lost all my “tweaks”. Thanks for the Cds BTW. Just ordered Matthew Perrymen Jones’ latest (only?) today…

My blog is set up with Dreamhost, and I haven’t had any trouble yet with WordPress there. But I have not yet tried to upgrade to the new version. I’ll have to remember and back everything up locally before I do so.

Let me know what you think of Matthew’s record. My favorite song on it is “Refuge”, and the best line is in the chorus: “take me to a place where mystery can dance with truth”. The first time I heard Matthew play a show was just after I moved here, and I didn’t know any of his music. Usually the first time I hear someone in concert I don’t remember any of their lyrics after the show, but I remembered that line from Refuge.

I’ve been pleased with Dreamhost otherwise. It will actually backup your files when you upgrade. I had a few things setup in the template (Sidebar/CSS) I was using and I didn’t want to just copy the php/css files from the old to the new, probably would have been OK though, but this way I don’t have to worry about upgrading.

“Refuge” is a great song. I think all of the pegs are “live” bands though. I’ve enjoyed the live recordings more then the albums.

Geni is pretty cool… but I thought you HATED Flash.

  6. Mike Says:

Yeah, I hate the overuse of flash, and I couldn’t be without Flashblock (https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/433). There are some valid (http://www.adobe.com/products/flex/) uses (http://labs.adobe.com/wiki/index.php/Apollo) though.

    I suggest http://www.arcalife.com

The family tree is more feature-rich and it allows GedCom upload and supports different formats.
